Dr Gareth Wynn read both Medicine and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Manchester in the UK and completed a Doctor of Medicine (Research) degree, entitled “Improving ablation outcomes in atrial fibrillation: improving procedural efficacy, safety, and patient selection”, at Imperial College London, ranked one of the top ten universities in the World.
After medical training in Manchester, UK, and Wellington, New Zealand, he completed Cardiology and Electrophysiology training at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), at the time the UK’s largest single site cardiovascular centre, where he helped Professor Dhiraj Gupta establish LHCH as a major arrhythmia research centre.
Gareth moved to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2015 where, along with A/Prof Neil Strathmore, he is one of only two cardiologists in Victoria accredited to extract chronically implanted pacemakers and defibrillators. Dr Wynn and A/Prof Strathmore provide the state-wide extraction service both for Victoria and Tasmania.
Gareth has an interest in patient-centred clinical research, especially in atrial fibrillation and his research is cited in current international guidelines. His research won him the British Heart Rhythm Society’s Young Investigator Award as well as awards from the British Cardiovascular Society and British Heart Foundation.
Gareth specialises in the management of heart rhythm disorders and is a European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) Certified Electrophysiology Specialist. As well as device and lead extraction, he performs implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators, including biventricular and subcutaneous devices. He performs EP studies and ablations at a number of private hospitals. He is one of only a very small number of cardiologists in Australia performing venoplasty for device related venous stenosis/occlusion.
As well as patients with heart rhythm problems (including atrial fibrillation, syncope (collapse), fast or slow heart rates and those needing/with pacemakers or defibrillators), Gareth sees patients with the full range of general cardiology conditions where his dual RACP Fellowship in General Medicine helps him care for even those with complex comorbidities.
