Dr Matthew Bates graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2002 with an honors degree in Medicine and Surgery, having completed a first class honours degree in Pharmacology in 1999.

Following general medical training in Edinburgh and Newcastle upon Tyne, he achieved membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 2005 and then trained in cardiology in the Northern Deanery. He undertook sub-specialty training in Cardiac Rhythm Management in Newcastle and Middlesbrough achieving British Heart Rhythm Society accreditation for Cardiac Devices in 2011 and Clinical Electrophysiology in 2014, having been awarded his PhD in 2013. He completed sub-specialty training in the UK in 2014, and is currently undertaking a clinical fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology and devices at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
